Position Description
Cement finishers employed by Hensel Phelps are responsible for placement and surface preparation of concrete in conformance with the project requirements. The placing and finishing process begins with the placement of the concrete in the concrete forms. This is done either through the handling of a large bucket suspended from a crane that transports the concrete from the concrete truck to the placement area or through the use of concrete pumps. In either case, the concrete finisher, in conjunction with laborers, is responsible for positioning themselves on the concrete forms and moving the pump hose or concrete bucket into place for the pouring of the concrete. This can entail working in awkward positions while handling either the concrete bucket or the pump hose.
After the concrete has been poured, the concrete finisher must finish the concrete surface to meet the tolerances for thickness and flatness before the concrete has cured. Initially, the concrete finisher must strike the concrete with a screed to create a level, smooth surface. This work is performed with a wood or aluminum screed, with the concrete finisher bending over the concrete surface pulling the screed over the concrete to smooth it out and level it. For concrete slabs, this task requires the concrete finisher to work either on his hands and knees or stooped over for several hours at a stretch.
After the concrete has been screeded, a bull float is applied to the concrete to further smooth the surface and bring the moisture to the top of the concrete area. A bull float is generally an 8-inch by 4-foot aluminum float attached by a rotating connection to a telescoping handle. The float is operated by a concrete finisher applying pressure to the float as it is moved back and forth over the concrete.

After the bull float has been applied to the concrete, a trowel is used to finish the surface when the concrete has reached a semi-cured status.Troweling is performed both with a mechanical trowel and manually.A mechanical trowel is a heavy machine resembling a floor buffer with a pattern of steel blades that rotates over the surface of the concrete.During the mechanical troweling process, the concrete finisher moves the machine over the concrete surface to level the concrete and develop the desired finish.

Often, after the mechanical trowel has been used, the final troweling is performed by the concrete finisher using a 14-inch steel trowel, stooping over to prepare the final surface finish. After the troweling is complete, a broom may be used on the concrete to provide a texture for traction for people walking on the concrete.
